Shangzhi is a city of hero. It is the city named after the anti-Japanese hero Zhao Shangzhi. It is the national first class old revolutionary base area.

The whole city covers an area of 8,825 square kilometers including "eighty percent of mountains, five percent of water and fifteen percent of farmland,"
